Grantchester star Kacey Ainsworth has revealed she gave up acting for seven years after her son Elwood was diagnosed with autism.

The ex-EastEnders star, 50, told The Mirror she limited her workload to just one acting job a year after Elwood, now 11, was revealed to be on the autistic spectrum at the age of six.

This comes as Kacey also revealed that Elwood has thrived since his diagnosis, and enjoys nothing more than playing football, hockey and rugby.

Kacey – who also shares daughter Blossom, 14, with partner Darren Hales – admitted she chose to limit her acting commitments as it would be ‘too chaotic’ for her son.

The star also explained that she never suspected Elwood had autism until he was three, when it was mentioned to her by a nursery teacher.

She said: ‘I was really shocked.  He went to our local communication disorder clinic and I sat behind glass and watched my child being assessed by an educational psychologist, speech therapist and a child psychologist. It was excruciating.

‘It was a sad day, because you have a baby and you want things to be normal. You have to go through that grieving process where you think – this isn’t what I’d set out for.’

After seeking advice from Anna Kennedy Online and ADD-vance, Kacey revealed she is now an ambassador for both organisations.

Since his diagnosis, the former soap star added that Elwood has gone on to thrive, and enjoys playing all kind of sports.
